What is Microsuction?

Microsuction is the process of removing wax from the ear using a small suction tube attached to a medical grade suction unit in order to gently remove wax from the ear.

Microsuction is not painful but can be noisy and cause some mild discomfort whilst being carried out.

Is Microsuction ear wax removal safe?

Why would you need Microsuction?

Having wax in the ears is completely normal and if the wax does not cause any problems for you, it does not need to be removed. However in the case of excessive wax build up or impaction people may experience hearing loss, a sensation of fullness or dizziness. In these situations you may want the wax to be removed.

What is Microsuction?
  • What happens after I book an appointment?
As part of making your booking for Microsuction you will be required to complete a pre appointment form. This form contains important health screening questions to ensure it is safe for you to undergo Microsuction and the facility to give your consent to treatment after reviewing the terms of service and risks. Once the pre appointment form has been completed, your answers will be reviewed. You will then be contacted to confirm the answers on your questionnaire and to confirm a date and time for your appointment.
  • When and how do I pay?
Following your appointment you will be charged based on the procedure carried out. No payment is required prior to your appointment as it is difficult to bill correctly prior to examining your ears in person. You are able to pay by card or cash.
  • Are there any risks associated with microsuction ear wax removal?
Wax removal via microsuction is considered safer than other methods such as syringing. However, syringing, irrigation, or probe removal may be undertaken if considered to be more appropriate by the clinician. Incidents during ear wax removal are uncommon, especially with microsuction. However, possible minor risks that can occur and are deemed to be acceptable include: small nicks to the ear canal which can result in minor bleeding, soreness, mild discomfort and short-term ringing in the ear (tinnitus). To ensure the risk of complication is minimal, it is essential that an accurate past medical history is supplied at the time of booking. More serious risk to the ear or eardrum can occur if the client does not / cannot remain adequately still during the procedure. Clients should inform the clinician of any likely movements. Further possible complications, side-effects and material risks inherent in the procedure include but are not limited to the incomplete removal of ear wax requiring a return visit (for severely impacted wax), persistent tinnitus, perforation of the eardrum, hearing loss and infection. To keep the risk of infection to a minimum, all equipment used in the ear is sterilised or single-use. However, there is always a risk that infection may occur once out of the practitioner's care. The CE marked suction unit is designed to remove fluids from the airway or respiratory support system and infectious materials from wounds. It has been adapted for the use of aural micro-suction.
  • What happens if you find something abnormal in my ears?
In the event that something abnormal is found in your ears. A decision will be made on whether it is safe to continue microsuction in that ear. A picture of the inside of your ear will be taken and given to you. You will then be advised to attend your GP with this picture for a further medial opinion, treatment and referral to ENT as necessary.
  • Is there any aftercare advice that I should know about?
Once wax is removed from the ear there is a slightly higher risk of infection, as the protective barrier the wax offers has been removed. Therefore, to reduce of risk of infection, it is advised to keep the ears dry for 5 days post microsuction. Before showering apply some cotton wool to the opening of the ear canal to ensure the ear canal remains dry. Avoid swimming for 7 days post microsuction. If you experience any pain or discharge in the days after you have undergone microsuction, attend your GP as you may have an ear infection requiring treatment.
